PROMOTION OF KANGAROO MOTHER CARE

“Kangaroo mother care,” a type of newborn care involving skin-to-skin contact with the mother or other caregiver, reduces mortality in infants with low birth weight (<2.0 kg) when initiated after stabilization, but the majority of deaths occur before stabilization. The safety and efficacy of kangaroo mother care initiated soon after birth among infants with low birth weight are uncertain. Infants with low birth weight who are born preterm, are small for their gestational age, or both constitute approximately 15% of all neonates worldwide but account for 70% of all neonatal deaths. Reducing mortality among these infants, particularly those born in low- and middle-income countries in Malawi - sub-Saharan Africa, is therefore key to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals target of reducing neonatal mortality to a level at least as low as 12 deaths per 1000 live births in all countries by 2030.
